at Coffeeboy in Fillmore

Coffeeboy, in conjuction with GOGALLERY will be hosting a collection of recent toy camera works by Jeremy Kirsch. These stark and sometimes ghostly images of the Fillmore and Ventura areas were taken with a toy camera.

Coffeeboy is 358 Central Avenue in Fillmore. There will be a reception for the artist and live music from both Pam & Terri and Hope & Justin. The performances begin at 7PM. For more info visit their website at http://coffeboy.net or call 805.524.0572.

Landscape of the Mortally Wounded, oils on canvas, 40" x 30"

Josh Bricker

Saturday June 14, 2008

I use my work to explore a wide variety of issues and concepts, ranging from tangible human experiences like love and relationships to more theoretically abstract ideas like time and space. The works themselves are the physical manifestations of my life experiences, research and the subconscious mind. Because of this, my works are a juxtaposition of representational and abstract images, which are selected for their allegorical significance or are the creation of my subconscious. Through these visual elements I try to construct a dialogue with the viewer and create a tension/feeling between my pieces and the audience in hopes that even if the allegories and messages are missed, the audience still has a way to connect to the work. I also minimize the amount of visual elements in my works to create a disconnect between my ìquietî imagery and the more modern, ìloudî aesthetic that dominates modern culture. Our culture is inundated with imagery almost every second of every day, which has caused people to develop attention deficit disorders when it comes to visual stimuli. Leaving viewers with a feeling of discomfort or boredom whenever there is a minimal amount of imagery. It is this feeling of discomfort and uneasiness that I like to exploit and use as the central element in my work.

There will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, June 14 at 5:30 PM. Musical guests TBA.

Featherhead, digital illustration

Pablo Ruvalcaba

Featherhead and Friends

Sat., April 12 @ 5:00 pm

On a sunny December, afternoon while driving on South Mountain Rd. towards Santa Paula, Pablo lost control of the car as he drifted onto the narrow, dirt shoulder and into a 5' deep irrigation ditch. He managed to total his auntís brand new burgundy Honda Accord and walk away without a scratch. His family thought for sure that he had dozed off and fallen to sleep behind the wheel. Pablo explained that he didn't. He said, "I was looking up at the beautiful cumulus cloud formation - checking out the sunrays with hundreds of beams of light cascading through the clouds."

Whether Pablo is daydreaming, night dreaming or having nightmares when he's awake, he likes to record the images from these altered states in journals and creates digital computer sketches. In a sense, he makes his dreams come to life. In his imaginative style, Pablo's lucid dreams blended with natures wonders bring his dreams to life.

GOGALLERY is pleased to present the work of Fillmore's own Pablo Ruvalcaba. His collection of digital illustrations will be on display at GOGALLERY on Saturday, April 12 @ 5PM

Love, oil on canvas, 24" x 36"

Alex Becerra

January 12, 2008 @ 5:30pm

Alex Becerra has got mad art skills. Born in the tiny off the highway town of Piru, CA. Becerra continues to reside and create in his hometown and he is damn proud of it. Fueled by his love of music, tattoo art and graffiti culture Becerra's work combines organic, free flowing visuals and solid graphic messages. His work is both peaceful and chaotic as if you're looking up admiring the clouds when all of a sudden you find that a jumbo jet is heading right towards you.

18 year old Becerra doesn't like to be asked what he is going to do with his art. "If you ask, you're not worthy of getting an answer," he says. Becerra explains that he creates art so he can express his true lifestyle. He proclaims that "without art this world would be nothing but a blank canvas with the government watching your every move!"

Becerra's work can be characterized by his renditions of today's pop culture icons. He depicts a classical figurative torso as a dismembered body or paints a stark portrait of the Unabomber against a serenely colored background. Fusing modern day drama with classical images, Becerra's imagery evokes a yearning to balance this messy world.

There will be a reception for the artist on January 12, 2008 @ 5:30 pm. Musical and poetry guests TBA.

Carina Downing

The Wonder Tunnel

Dec. 15 - 22, 2007

The Wonder Tunnel is an interactive installation in which people deposit their wonders and explore the wonders of others. It is a tunnel structure large enough for one person to crawl into at a time. The ceiling and walls are lined with envelopes.

You may write your wonders down on slips of paper and deposit them into these envelopes and you may also explore the envelopes to see what other people's wonders are.

This tunnel can be seen for the first time on December 15, 2007 at Fillmore's new art space, GOGALLERY. The exhibition will also feature photographs and videos from my previous interactive installations and public guerrilla art projects.

In order to start the Wonder Tunnel off I am now accepting emails of your wonders which will be deposited in the Wonder Tunnel for the opening day. Please send emails to carinadowning[a]gmail.com.

Carina Downing is a Fillmore, CA based artist and has been an instigator of several guerilla art installations that have been publicly exhibited in Ventura and San Francisco CA. Referring to her work as "public intervention art", her impromptu art showings have included such projects as The Early Bird Gets the Worm, Letters to Strangers and Lunchtime Limbo. Downing is currently studying art and photography at Cal Sate Long Beach.

There will be an opening reception for the artist on Saturday, December 15 at 5:00 pm and a closing reception on Saturday, December 22 at 5:00 pm. On December 15, musical guests Franklin for Short, Goats with Sweaters, Pam and Teri, and Judy Valencerina will be featured.
